Italian Cruise - Part One
Sep. 28th, 2024 08:08 amI am posting this today from a cruise ship on the Italian coast, just south of Pisa!
The humans and I started our grand adventure with a two-day train journey from London to Venice, via Paris and (unexpectedly) Zurich. Our Venice hotel had a lovely courtyard - but many, many, many stairs...
It was near Trouser Street, Trouser Bridge and Trouser Square!
The humans and I had been to Venice before (all together once in 2007) but we'd never travelled by gondola, since we thought it would be an expensive tourist trap. But the other humans we were travelling with discovered a gondola service that took us directly across the Grand Canal for a very reasonable fee - and it was really fun!
On our lengthy trek to St Mark's Square on our only full day in the city, we came across an exhibition on Esoterica and took a detour to look round. I don't think I accidentally joined a cult...
One of the things I like about Venice is that you can wander around and discover amazing sights around every corner:
We finally made it to St Mark's Square, which is a place that holds a lot of fond memories from previous trips for my primary human (this was her fourth visit).
But it was flooded! The cafes were all still open and people were selling galoshes so visitors could stomp about in the giant puddles and still get coffee...
Instead of walking back, we jumped on the Vaporetto (basically the local bus that's actually a boat) and took a trip along most of the Grand Canal:
Once we discovered space on the outside deck at the back, it proved very relaxing and a lovely way to see more of the city.
Then we travelled on to Ravenna and boarded a much, much bigger boat!
