Annie-and-Dave-Con

This past Saturday was the 16th annual Annie-and-Dave-Con, at which my humans celebrated their wedding anniversary with a games day attended by lots of their friends. The pub's Pride decorations added an extra special layer to the event banner!

1 Banner

Lots of games were played, including the beautifully designed Tokaido, in which players go for a lovely walk in the Japanese countryside:

2 Tokaido

I also helped my primary human play a very old card game called Plus & Minus:

A good time was had by all!

Phantom Peak

A couple of weeks ago, my humans, several of their friends and I all dressed up for an epic adventure at Phantom Peak, an immersive puzzle-related adventure event in London. My primary human looked particularly wonderful:

1 Me+Bear

And the rest of our gang had also made an excellent effort with their costumes:

2 Dave 3 Richard 4 Chris 5 Ruth 6 Terry+Liz

There were plenty of cast members eager to make our acquaintance too:

7 Mayor

Our favourites were LoveHeart and his friend Sherlock Bones:

8 LoveHeart+Sherlock Bones

My humans and I formed a team with two of our other party members, solving puzzles and collecting tokens to help our overall team, the Mechanics, in the over-arching competition:

9 Teamwork

And my primary human and I got to take part in the closing ceremony, representing the whole Mechanics team and leading them to an ultimate victory, with the help of LoveHeart and Sherlock Bones:

10 High Five

I was even interviewed on stage about my experiences:

11 Thanks
And then we got to disrupt a very problematic wedding!

12 Edited Wedding Video

Overall, it was a lot of fun, everyone there did an excellent job to make us feel welcome and special, and we all had a great time.

Somerset Reading Retreat

Last weekend, the humans went back to the lovely house in Somerset where reading retreats are held, and had a glorious time, reading and being looked after by Cressi and Sara. My good friend, Snoozy Boi, went with them! He slept most of the way...

Snoozy Bag

And these are the books my primary human read across the three days of being away (including travel time):

Snoozy Books

A good time was had by all - and I'm looking forward to attending the next reading retreat - in June!

Transformational Retreat in Cromer

My primary human and I accompanied a group of amazing writers to Cromer for a retreat this past weekend. One of the newer members of our family, Snoozy Boy, came too, though he spent most of the weekend asleep...

1 Snoozing

You will note exercise equipment in the background - my human got up for 8:15am yoga on both days, while Snoozy and I sensibly stayed in bed...

The house we stayed in was clearly friendly to bears, as this lovely picture was on the sideboard outside our room:

2 Polar Bear

We also had a very personable elephant watching over us:

3 Elephant

One of the main activities of the weekend was my human running her first ever writing workshop - Using Tarot for Creative Inspiration! She thought it would be a good idea to have a separate deck for every participant, so was forced (oh no!) to buy two more before the trip:

4 Workshop

There was also a lot of very, very good food, as the host's partner attended to provide all the catering. On the last night, the humans enjoyed a delicious Middle Eastern banquet:

5 Banquet

It was a truly wonderful event - and we're hoping to do it again soon!

Reading Retreat - Hereford

My primary human and I spent a glorious weekend near Hereford for a reading retreat - our first in over a year! We decided to start as we meant to go on - first book begun on the train:

1 Train

The house was an impressive pile - perhaps haunted, but only by friendly ghosts, we decided:

2 House

We think perhaps the owners like tractors...

2 House

Our room was fit for royalty!

4 Room

There were lots of new friends to encounter:

4 Room

These fine individuals watched over us at night:

4 Room

And these fellows were ready to greet the new day with us in the morning!

7 Monks

We were happy to see the Reading Retreat penguin and Totoro again - and made a new friend of Oliver the bear, who was accompanying his human reader:

8 Friends

Lots of good reading accomplished!

9 Books

Looking forward to the next one - in December!

Italian Cruise - Part Three

We did get off the ship a couple of times during our week-long cruise! The first stop was at Messina in Sicily:

1 Messina

We wandered around and met a giant bear just hanging out in the street!

2 Giant Bear

We also saw an impressive church with lots of intricately carved wooden beams in the ceiling:

3 Church

And here is Neptune, holding back the sea!

4 Fountain

We also visited Rome for the day, seeing the Coliseum:

5 Coliseum

The forum was the best site we saw and we explored it thoroughly:

7 Forum

We also made it to the Pantheon, which the humans remembered liking last time we were there, but we ran out of time and couldn't go inside without risking missing the ship! Still impressive from the outside, though.

8 Pantheon T
he whole trip had a lot of ups and downs, but the ups were pretty good overall!

Italian Cruise - Part Two

Once we boarded the ship, we found out fairly spacious cabin, which had a large porthole almost directly out onto the sea (we were on Deck 2):

1 Cabin

There were lots of great places to hang out on the ship - my primary human and I particularly like the Viking Lounge right at the top, which looked out over the pool deck:

2 Pool Deck

The place my primary human got her twice-daily coffee quickly became known as the Bear Cafe, for obvious reasons... I enjoyed my opportunity to hang out with the fast crowd!

3 Bear Cafe

There was plenty of weird art to accompany any trip up or down the stairs...

4 Art

And even a chapel where passengers could get married!

5 Chapel

We had cute visitors throughout the week, including this friendly individual:

6 Pig

...and this cheerful chap!

7 Monkey

There were a couple of fun roleplaying sessions towards the end of the cruise, in which the party was tasked with rescuing a baby owlbear from nefarious folk:

8 RPG

And, in a few weeks' time, we will be welcoming a new bear friend into our home - because the humans got swept up in the excitement of the on board art auctions - and bought a painting!

9 Bear Painting

One more post to come, detailing our trips off the boat!

Italian Cruise - Part One

I am posting this today from a cruise ship on the Italian coast, just south of Pisa!

The humans and I started our grand adventure with a two-day train journey from London to Venice, via Paris and (unexpectedly) Zurich. Our Venice hotel had a lovely courtyard - but many, many, many stairs...

1 Hotel

It was near Trouser Street, Trouser Bridge and Trouser Square!

2 Trouser Street

The humans and I had been to Venice before (all together once in 2007) but we'd never travelled by gondola, since we thought it would be an expensive tourist trap. But the other humans we were travelling with discovered a gondola service that took us directly across the Grand Canal for a very reasonable fee - and it was really fun!

3 Gondola

On our lengthy trek to St Mark's Square on our only full day in the city, we came across an exhibition on Esoterica and took a detour to look round. I don't think I accidentally joined a cult...

4 Esoterica

One of the things I like about Venice is that you can wander around and discover amazing sights around every corner:

5 Wandering

We finally made it to St Mark's Square, which is a place that holds a lot of fond memories from previous trips for my primary human (this was her fourth visit).

6 St Mark's Square

But it was flooded! The cafes were all still open and people were selling galoshes so visitors could stomp about in the giant puddles and still get coffee...

7 Flooding

Instead of walking back, we jumped on the Vaporetto (basically the local bus that's actually a boat) and took a trip along most of the Grand Canal:

8 Vaporetto

Once we discovered space on the outside deck at the back, it proved very relaxing and a lovely way to see more of the city.

9 At the Back

Then we travelled on to Ravenna and boarded a much, much bigger boat!

10 Ship

To be continued...

Stourhead

This past weekend, the humans and I took a trip to Stourhead in Wiltshire for a family wedding. We got to stay in this lovely National Trust cottage:

1 Cottage

The wedding was held at the Temple of Apollo, in the absolutely gorgeous park:

2 Park

Two of the other guests had brought some furry friends with them - meet Bounce and Bouncette!

3 Guests

We had a whole day spare after the excellent wedding so we decided to look round Stourhead House, which had a very impressive gate:

4 Gate

The house itself was pretty impressive too!

5 House

This fine individual was on guard in the front hall:

6 Guard

And this gentleman was obviously enjoying the library:

7 Reader

We met this cutie in the gardens:

9 Horse

The humans came away with some mystery books, some lovely flowers and a couple of spare bottles left over from the reception:

10 Books

It was an excellent weekend all round!

Writing Retreats

My primary human and I set off for Somerset last week to attend a four-day writing retreat with 17 other writers. Most of the group were housed in cute cabins like this:

1 Cabin

They were very cosy inside:

2 Cabin Lounge

Each also had a double bed in a cubby hole that had a ladder for access and a very cute door:

3 Cubby Hole

The bathrooms were very luxurious, but did require a trip outside and along a little boardwalk:

4 Cabin Bathroom

My human, however, was one of the lucky ones staying in the cottage:

5 Cottage

We had the benefit of brick walls and a lot more space:

6 Cottage Lounge

Not to mention a lovely bedroom:

7 Cottage Bedroom

The surroundings were extremely lush and very quiet (apart from the cows...):

8 Greenery

Outside of the truly excellent and very inspiring workshops, my human had plenty of opportunity to plan her next novel, accompanied of course by copious amounts of tea:

9 Writing and Tea

On the last night, we all gathered to make pizza:

10 Pizza Prep

Much fun was had with the outside ovens:

11 Pizza Ovens

When everyone else headed home on Monday, my human and I travelled on to an undisclosed location in Ireland to meet up with some other writer friends for four more days of retreat! The house we were staying in was very old and we weren't allowed to take many pictures.

We were issued a strong metal box to protect our snacks from the mice...

12 Mouse Box

But there was a very friendly bear to chat too - say hello to Baba Bear!

13 Baba Bear

Overall, we had an excellent trip and met lots of lovely people - plus, my human completed the outline of her latest novel!

Boating adventure!

My humans and I are meeting up with our friends Kate and Jeremy this evening for food, chat and probably a game or two. However, before that, my secondary human and Kate are going to spend the afternoon watching some dragon boat racing in Docklands. I'm really looking forward to it!

Um, it's possible we may have packed slightly too much.

20240711_123215

The only way to travel.

20240711_125714

Train, train, train.

20240711_134457

So much for the Met Office saying 80% chance of rain. What a beautiful day! It's, er, possible we might have started in the wrong place to find the event though...

20240711_142558

Time for a quick jump on the Clipper. Only one stop!

20240711_143200

Zoom zoom!

20240711_143339

After the boat, ten mins on the bus and we're nearly there. Lovely to see this jolly fellow!

20240711_145016

Dragon boats! It's a big fundraiser for Water Aid which is great.

20240711_150319

My secondary human got a chance to play with his new fancy-pants 3D camera. I helped!

20240711_153218

After watching the racing for a few hours we headed off to meet up with the others. I don't normally like Canary Wharf but this was pretty on the way to the station.

20240711_165138

Ah - nice to relax at the end of an exciting day!

Weekend in Dorset

The humans and I spent a lovely weekend down in Dorset, for a performance by my secondary human's choir. We were offered a sweet little Airbnb in the area at a discount!

Choir Wkend 1

This fine individual was guarding the front door:

Choir Wkend 2

We had to make sure at least the bottom half of the door was closed at all times, as the property owner had several very large, friendly dogs.

Choir Wkend 3

The furnishings were cute and colourful:

Choir Wkend 4

Much tea was drunk in comfy surroundings:

Choir Wkend 5

We almost wished it had been colder, so we could have taken advantage of this lovely stove:

Choir Wkend 6

But the weather was mostly very bright and the view was good...

Choir Wkend 7

On both sides of the property:

Choir Wkend 8

While the choir rehearsed, my primary human and I repaired to a very pleasant cafe for the day - where she finished revisions on her current novel!

Choir Wkend 9

It was all going so well, until my primary human stepped in a hole on a walk in the park and sprained her ankle - oh dear!

Wimbledon geocaching (with surprise addition!)

My humans have recently been hanging out with one of my primary human's old university friends and his family. It's been lovely to make some new friends! This Sunday, we'd planned to visit the west of Wimbledon Common, near where our friends live, where there is a big collection of caches close together. However, my secondary human forgot to book a table at the pub we'd agreed to meet at (oops!) and only realised the night before, by which time they were booked up. So, instead we did the east side where the caches are fewer and further apart - more exercise is always good! We can pick up the west-side ones next time.

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-05 at 18.55.09(2)

The day started off in a normal fashion. If you can't spot the cache in the photo, finding it for real was much harder!

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-05 at 18.55.10

Left behind two tiny friends at the next one. And eagle eyes might notice a small human in the background...

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-05 at 18.55.09(1)

Caching got interrupted when we turned a corner and there was Wimbledon Windmill!

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-05 at 18.55.09

The museum inside was great!

20240505_151148

This collection of tools reminded my secondary human of the amazing set of woodworking tools his grandfather had collected from a long line of his ancestors who were all carpenters and turners. Unfortunately, that ended at my human's dad - my human can barely bang in a nail! The tools were all given away to a good home.

20240505_151630

There were so many excellent working models inside the museum. This is a cut-away of the Wimbledon windmill when it was working.

20240505_151549

20240505_151433

20240505_151428

20240505_151352

So many fully working models of windmills!

20240505_151228

I am become Death destroyer of.. Wait! Get off, put me down!

My favourite two stories from the Windmill museum both concerned the final owner. Firstly, when he moved to a different windmill, he sold the body of his current one to a new owner but was careful to ensure the bill of sale didn't include the contents. When the new owner arrived, he found the inside had been completely stripped of gears and grindstones so he couldn't compete with the old owner in his new mill (not nice)! Secondly, while the owner had been in Wimbledon Windmill, one way he earned some extra money was to police the common to stop duels. Duels had been illegal for several decades but still happened fairly often. If the mill owner heard one was going to happen, he hid in a bush nearby and when the parties took out the pistols he leapt out and banged them on the head with his truncheon!

20240505_151843

And that's not everything - the mill was also where Robert Baden-Powell wrote a large section of the first draft of Scouting for Boys and he and his sister Agnes worked on the equivalent for the Girl Guides.

20240505_154608

We picked up a few more caches after and the humans added this bench to the ever-excellent Open Benches.

20240505_163821

The group said their goodbyes and headed off home. My humans got a bus back to near the car (via going back to the lunchtime pub for pudding). The bus stop was opposite the UK Vatican Embassy, which is apparently all the way down in Wimbledon - how odd!

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-05 at 14.47.35

All in all, another lovely day had by everyone (I'm in there somewhere)!

Nostalgic Oxford Trip

The humans and I took a mid-week trip to Oxford a few days ago - primarily to see Come From Away on tour, as it has been over a year since it closed its run in London and the humans were feeling deprived.

The show was amazing, as ever, but we also took the opportunity for a trip down memory lane for my primary human, with a tour around the city.

This sign in the carpark offered an intriguing instruction:

Oxford 1-Angels

The humans' Airbnb was opposite this lovely pub, where they had a pleasant drink after the show the night before:

Oxford 2-Pub

The main point of nostalgia for my primary human was a wander round her alma mater, St Catherine's College - her first year room was the second one in on the top floor of the block at the top right of this photo:

Oxford 3-Annie Room

She also remembered that her best friend Lindsay's room was the top right corner of this block, now mysteriously obscured by a very keen tree!

Oxford 4-Lindsay Room

Not every place we went was a source of dreamy recollection - since this rather bizarre building (a school for boys aged 4-13) definitely wasn't there 25 years ago!

Oxford 6-Weird School

Something else the humans weren't doing 25 years ago was geocaching - but on this trip it took us to some interesting places - this statue of Eleanor Roosevelt stands in the grounds of Mansfield College:

Oxford 7-Eleanor

And the cache in question was just outside the Dean's lodgings - and is apparently maintained by the college (the description says you can ask the porters for help finding it!):

Oxford 8-College Cache

We also found a bench dedicated to JRR Tolkein, deep in the University Park:

Oxford 9-Tolkein

And this cheery individual offered a friendly wave on our way back to the car to head home:

Oxford 10-Penguin

A wonderful trip all round!

Brighton Birthday Bash!

20240413_075933

My humans' friend Claire decided to have her birthday celebration in Brighton this year so we're off for a jolly day trip! Thanks to a new train route, we can now get there in two hours!

20240413_100739

Arrived! Plenty of these folks around.

20240413_101417

It's very nice here.

20240413_102104

We've managed to arrive really early so let's go for a slow stroll along the promenade while we're waiting.
Yikes! Hello, good sir!

20240413_105438

Time to relax and do some beach meditation before meeting up with everyone.

20240413_121045

The first thing we did was go on the awesome Volk's Electric Railway along the beachfront.

I20240413_112627

I always wanted to be a train driver. Ding ding!

20240413_115552

At the end of the line, clever friends of my human found a giant geocache after solving a complicated puzzle.

20240413_124613

Halfway back along the train line we stopped off to do some mini-golf at this excellent place.

20240413_124217

This is my game!

20240413_111136

Took the train back to town. At the station, you could leave a note about your journey so I thanked them for allowing bears on their trains.

20240413_102509

Onto the pier!

20240413_151040

Pew! Pew! Pew!

20240413_160124

She's very close.. And I am full of grain...

20240413_162824

This is a comfy place to relax. Wait, hang on a mo...

20240413_161803

On second thoughts, this is better!

20240413_174719

Just time to chill in a park for an hour before we head home. Very nice surroundings.

20240413_185558

All in all, a lovely day in Brighton.

20240413_112114

Happy birthday Claire!

Spring Caching

The humans finally remembered to take me out on a trip - hurrah!

We went to Fairlop, where we had an extremely nice lunch in a cafe, then set off to find some caches.

The first set were along a footpath that ran alongside the railway line:

Caching 1

Spring was definitely springing and there were lots of beautiful flowers around to enjoy:

Caching 2

It's usually easy to find beautiful things, even in unexpected places:

Caching 3

My primary human spent ages searching the leaf litter and turning over rocks and bricks, looking for this cache, then straightened up and it nearly hit her in the head!

Caching 4

When we finally got to the park, there were humans engaging in strange activities on the lake...

Caching 5

But the caches remained fairly easy to spot, even for my less-than-observant human:

Caching 6

I've never seen flowers like these before:

Caching 7

We also came across these fine folks at a junction in the path:

Caching 8

One of the last caches we found had a slightly larger tub, so I tasked one of my small bear friends with hiding inside to surprise the next human who came along!

Caching 9

We also came across this!

Caching 10

It was a great afternoon overall! We found all the caches we looked for, we wandered around a lovely park, the weather was just nice, and the humans didn't get too tired. Yay for spring!

A Weekend in Wales

The humans and I took a long weekend trip to Wales recently, as suggested by one of their friends. We started our trip in Tenby, which had a nice station:

1 Tenby Station

It also had tons of lovely flowers around the walls:

2 Tenby Flowers

And a great view from the top of the cliffs:

3 Seascape

More than one, in fact:

4 Island

Our Airbnb was called The Hoot - I wonder why...?

5 The Hoot

Our second day trip was to Pembroke, which had an impressive castle:

6 Pembroke Castle

First, though, we stopped off for lunch - I think 'black pudding' and 'salad' ought to be mutually exclusive...

7 Black Pudding Salad

Inside the castle was just as impressive as outside:

8 Pembroke Map

On our last day, we went to Caerphilly, which had a festival with jousting (though not as much cheese as we'd anticipated):

9 Jousting

And also a statue of Tommy Cooper...

10 Caerphilly Cooper

All in all, it was an excellent trip - thanks for organising it, Derek!

Leckhampton Hill

Last weekend, the humans and I went to visit our friends who live in Cheltenham. On Saturday, they suggested a 'short walk' up Leckhampton Hill and we all agreed we would walk the distance to get to the bottom of the hill, for extra exercise... This included going through a lovely park, which featured part of the river:

Cheltenham 1

There was some weird RPA (random public art, as the humans call it):

Cheltenham 2

And a large and very pleasant fountain:

Cheltenham 3

There was also this lovely stone construction, though we weren't sure what it was meant to be for:

Cheltenham 4

By the time we reached the area where the hill was situated, everyone was already a bit tired and we were rethinking the next stage of the outing. So, we stopped off at the pub:

Cheltenham 5

After some light refreshments, everyone was feeling more enthused, so we ventured onwards to Leckhampton Hill itself! I was quickly glad I wasn't one of the people doing the actual walking...

Cheltenham 6

There were a couple of rest stops along the way...

Cheltenham 7

It was a tough climb, but the view was worth it!

Cheltenham 8

This is called the Devil's Chimney:

Cheltenham 9

There were plenty of beautiful hawthorn trees in full bloom, one of my primary human's favourites:

Cheltenham 10

The total elevation was 294m - we didn't actually climb that far, but it certainly felt like it!

Cheltenham 11

My secondary human found this beautiful post at the very top of the hill - a lovely message to make the trip feel that much more worthwhile:

Cheltenham 12

All in all, we were glad we made the effort - though we still had to make our way back down again and also all the way back to the house...

Forty Hall Spring Fayre

The humans and I walked up to Forty Hall yesterday, to peruse the Spring Fayre being held there. It's a lovely building that we haven't visited much, even though it's only half an hour away:

Forty Hall 1

We visited the food court immediately upon arrival and enjoyed some delicious savoury crepes from Simply Scrumptious:

Forty Hall 3

It was lovely, sitting by the lake to eat:

Forty Hall 2

As well as walking around the craft and refreshment stalls, we went on a long walk around the grounds, and found this lovely bridge:

Forty Hall 4

The humans were determined that they wouldn't spend any money, but they were both tempted by some of the lovely wares on display. One succumbed to a beautiful candle holder:

Forty Hall 6

And the other couldn't resist an amazing array of really yummy sugar free baked goods from Treats Transformed:

Forty Hall 7

We took a slightly different route home and stopped off to enjoy the scenery:

Forty Hall 5

Overall, it was a lovely outing!

A brief geocaching sojourn

As we enter deep spring the buds are blooming, the lambs are leaping and the humans are engaging in occasional trips away from home to do a little geocaching in some of the lovely areas of Hertfordshire just north of where they live. Last week they decided to do such a loop around the hamlet of Water End.

It's important to find some stout walking sticks - they're also very useful for poking and prodding the ground when looking for caches.

We went down many lovely country lanes - it's so nice to get away from the city for a while.

Let's hope this flock of pheasants are being kept for their eggs rather than some posh bloke's fun.

This cache was relatively easy to locate. We found 8 and DNF'd 4 on the day.

Spring is definitely in the air!

This was only one of several picturesque spots we passed.

Overall all it was another lovely day - even better when you don't have to do the actual walking!
